Botz PRO 9316 Morganit – soft pink glaze for earthenware and stoneware

Botz PRO 9316 Morganit is a ready-to-use liquid glaze in a soft, pale pink for ceramics. The finish is glossy and semi-transparent. The firing range runs from 1020 to 1280 °C, so you can use the glaze on earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. The 200 ml pot suits smaller projects and test pieces.

The colour depends on the firing temperature. According to the Botz catalogue, this applies to the whole PRO range: at around 1050 °C the glazes turn strong and almost opaque, at 1150 °C they are more semi-transparent, and at 1250 °C they give a glassy, semi-transparent surface. As the glaze is semi-transparent, the colour of your clay also affects the result. A test piece made from your own clay will show you beforehand how the pink looks on it.

Application

Stir the glaze thoroughly before use. If it is too thick, add a little water. Apply it with a brush in 2 to 3 coats and let each coat dry. The glaze must be completely dry before firing.

• From 1020 °C (earthenware): 2–3 coats, the colour becomes strong and almost opaque
• Around 1150 °C (early-vitrifying clays): 2 coats, more semi-transparent finish
• High firing around 1250 °C: glassy and semi-transparent, also on porcelain

Avoiding runs

Botz points out that the PRO glazes run when applied thickly. So apply several thin coats rather than one thick one, and leave the foot of the piece unglazed. Protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash.

Tableware and combining

According to the catalogue, Botz recommends the PRO glazes for tableware. For this, the clay must be vitrified. With earthenware (1020–1100 °C), many clays are not yet watertight, so Botz advises against using such ceramics for liquids over long periods. If you sell tableware, you are yourself responsible for its suitability for food. The glaze combines well with BOTZ Unidekor.
