Mayco Jungle Gems CG-780 Mystic Jade – crystal glaze with jade and brown crystals
Mayco Jungle Gems CG-780 Mystic Jade is a liquid crystal glaze in a 118 ml container for decorative ceramics such as vases, bowls or figures. The base glaze is semi-transparent and blue-green. It contains jade and brown crystals that vary in how they develop. During firing the crystals spread out and create a pattern that is different on every piece.
Mystic Jade is not recommended for tableware (Not Dinnerware Safe): the surface may crackle and is therefore not suitable for contact with food. Use the glaze only on pieces that you use for decoration. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means that the product is exempt from hazard labelling.
Applying Mystic Jade
Shake and stir the glaze well before each use so that the crystals are evenly distributed. Then apply 2–3 even coats to bisque-fired ceramics with a fan brush and let each coat dry. With the third coat you may need to redistribute the crystals now and then so that they sit evenly on the piece.
- Shake and stir the glaze before each use
- 2–3 coats with the fan brush, letting each coat dry in between
- Allow to dry thoroughly after application before firing
Firing and avoiding run-off
Fire the glaze at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). At higher temperatures the colours become paler. The crystals can flow during firing. Do not apply the crystals close to the base, so that the glaze does not run onto the kiln shelf. A test piece shows you beforehand how the pattern looks on your clay body.
