Mayco Elements EL-134 Mirror Blue – glossy blue glaze for decorative ceramics
Mayco Elements EL-134 Mirror Blue is a glossy, deep blue glaze for bisque-fired ceramics, to be used on decorative pieces only. Fired at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in an oxidation firing, it gives a glossy, intense blue. At three coats the glaze is semi-transparent, so the clay body shows through slightly. The jar contains 118 ml.
Mirror Blue belongs to the Elements series from Mayco. According to Mayco, these glazes are designed for shelf firing at cone 06. The glaze runs heavily, so allow plenty of clearance from the kiln shelf right from the start.
Applying and firing Mirror Blue
Mayco recommends shaking the glaze for about 5–6 seconds before use. Put the amount you need onto a palette rather than painting straight from the jar, so the glaze in the jar stays clean.
- Prepare the bisque-fired piece so that it is free of dust and grease
- Apply several even coats with a soft brush; three coats give the semi-transparent effect
- Let each coat dry before applying the next
- Fire at cone 06 in a shelf firing; Mayco recommends a medium heating rate of approx. 139 °C/h
Avoiding runs
Mirror Blue moves a lot during firing. Apply a thinner layer on vertical surfaces in the lower third of the piece and leave the foot unglazed so that nothing runs onto the kiln shelf. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) the colour becomes darker, the glaze flows even more and surface defects can occur. Stick to cone 06.
What the glaze is suitable for
Use Mirror Blue on decorative items such as display bowls, figures or tiles. It is not intended for cups, plates or other vessels that come into contact with food. An overglaze cannot be combined with it.
