Mayco Fundamentals UG-224 Rose – opaque underglaze in soft pink

Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-224 Rose is an opaque underglaze in a soft rose shade, which you can use to paint, dab or layer decoration on ceramics. It is formulated for greenware and bisque and suits floral motifs, pastel areas and fine accents. The jar contains 59 ml (2 fl oz).

Opaque Fundamentals only show their true colour after firing. So before firing you will not yet see the finished pink.

Applying Rose

Shake the underglaze well before use. Apply it with a brush to greenware, leather-hard clay or bisque. For opaque coverage you need 2–3 coats; for softer shades of pink, apply fewer coats. Let each coat dry before applying the next, so that the layer underneath does not dissolve. On wet or leather-hard clay you can apply directly and then fire to cone 04.

Firing and clear glaze

For the Fundamentals series, Mayco gives a firing range from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The series is formulated for low-fire temperatures. Rose may fade at higher temperatures, around cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and above. Make a test piece on your clay and in your kiln before decorating a whole piece.

Without clear glaze, the underglaze fires matt. With a transparent clear glaze, the colour becomes more intense and glossy. For the clear glaze you fire a second time: at cone 06–05 on earthenware, in the range from cone 6 to cone 10 on stoneware. For Rose, Mayco recommends the clear glaze SW-001 Stoneware Clear.

For dinnerware

Hand-painted cups, plates and bowls are a typical use. For dinnerware, the underglaze is only intended for use under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze. You must therefore apply the clear glaze completely over the painted area.

Do not apply by spraying. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means no hazard labelling is required. For dinnerware, the underglaze is only suitable under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze); without clear glaze it is not intended for dinnerware.
