Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-217 Red Coral – coral red underglaze for ceramic decoration
Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-217 Red Coral is a warm, coral red underglaze for decorating ceramics: for patterns, floral motifs, accent areas and illustrations. The colour comes in a 59 ml bottle and belongs to Fundamentals, Mayco's first product line designed for colour consistency, ease of use and performance.
You apply it with a brush or sponge to wet clay, greenware or ware bisque-fired to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). One colour is all you need for fine lines, shading and solid areas: you control the intensity through the number of coats.
Application and firing
Apply UG-217 in 2–3 coats and let each coat dry slightly before applying the next. With fewer coats the coral tone is softer, with three coats it is stronger. If the colour is missing in places, the cause is usually too few or too thin coats. Mayco documents reference firings at cone 06 (oxidising), cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart, oxidising) and cone 10 (reducing). At cone 6 and cone 10 the colour becomes more concentrated. Fire a test piece in your own clay and firing programme first.
Matt or glossy, decoration or tableware
Without a clear glaze, Fundamentals fires matt. With a transparent clear glaze the surface becomes glossy, and the red looks softer and deeper. For mugs, plates and bowls, apply the clear glaze over the entire surface that comes into contact with food. According to Mayco, UG-217 is only suitable for tableware under a dinnerware-safe clear glaze. The colour suits floral motifs, graphic patterns and warm colour palettes, in the studio as well as in classes or for hobby pottery.
