Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-219 Marine Blue – navy blue underglaze
Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-219 Marine Blue is a navy blue underglaze for decorating pottery. It is formulated for greenware or bisque and, according to Mayco, covers the firing range from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The pot contains 59 ml.
Opaque Fundamentals only show their true colour after firing. Without clear glaze, the underglaze fires to a satin matt finish; with clear glaze, the surface turns glossy and the colour more intense. You can paint it on, dab it on or build it up in several layers. Depending on how you apply it, you get transparent shades of blue or rich areas of solid colour, for example for maritime motifs, contrasts or outlines.
Applying the underglaze
Shake the pot well before use. For opaque areas and bold designs, apply 2–3 coats, letting each coat dry first. You can work directly on wet or leather-hard clay and then fire to cone 04 (approx. 1,063 °C, guide value per Orton chart), or apply it to clay that has already been bisque-fired. As the actual colour only appears in the firing, it is worth making a test piece on your own clay.
- Apply with a brush: details, lines and areas
- A few thin coats give transparent shades of blue
- Several coats give rich, opaque areas of colour
Clear glaze, dinnerware and higher temperatures
With clear glaze you fire a second time: for earthenware at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 05 (approx. 1,031 °C, guide value per Orton chart), for stoneware in the range from cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). For Marine Blue, Mayco recommends SW-001 Stoneware Clear. If the piece is to be used as dinnerware, you need a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze over the underglaze. Fundamentals are formulated for lower temperatures, but most colours also keep their colour at higher firing temperatures. Test this on your own clay and in your own kiln.
