Mayco True Teal UG-091 – underglaze in clear turquoise

Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-091 True Teal (Mayco code UG-91) is an underglaze in a clear turquoise between blue and green, 59 ml. You brush or dab it onto leather-hard clay or bisque for patterns, details and larger areas. Applied thinly it gives more translucent shades; with several coats the areas become rich and opaque.

Without a clear glaze, True Teal fires matt. For greater colour intensity or for dinnerware, you need a clear glaze over it.

Working with True Teal

Shake the underglaze well before use. Apply it with a brush to wet or leather-hard clay, then fire to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). You can then apply a clear glaze and glaze fire to cone 06–05 (earthenware) or cone 5–10 (stoneware). Fewer coats are enough for designs; for opaque areas, apply several thin coats. The colours in the range can be mixed with one another.

Firing and colour effect

The Fundamentals Underglazes are designed for cone 06/05, and most keep their colour at higher temperatures too. With True Teal, without a clear glaze the colour becomes concentrated at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in an oxidation firing, while at cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in a reduction firing it fades slightly. Mayco recommends testing at your intended firing temperature.

Dinnerware only with clear glaze

According to Mayco, True Teal is suitable for dinnerware only under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without a clear glaze this does not apply. The ACMI AP (Approved Product) seal means, according to ACMI: exempt from hazard labelling.
