Mayco UG-236 Grey – mid-grey underglaze for clay, greenware and bisque
Mayco Fundamental Underglaze UG-236 Grey is a mid-grey underglaze for painting ceramics, colouring areas with full coverage or adding lines and shading. You apply it to wet clay, greenware or bisque fired to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). For patterns or opaque areas, Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. The neutral grey suits graphic, modern and monochrome designs.
Unglazed, Grey fires to a soft matt; under a clear glaze the surface becomes glossy. For the Fundamentals series, Mayco gives a firing range from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart).
Working with Grey
Stir the colour before use and apply it in 2–3 coats, letting each coat dry to the touch. This gives an even, opaque finish. With a brush you can paint details, lines and shading as well as larger areas. If you paint on greenware or wet clay, fire to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart), apply a transparent glaze and fire to cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The colour becomes lighter as a result. On bisque, let the underglaze dry, apply clear glaze and fire to cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart).
Behaviour at higher temperatures
According to Mayco, Grey stays matt at cone 06. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) the colour darkens, and at cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in a reducing firing it becomes cooler and darker. For stoneware, Mayco recommends the clear glaze SW-001 Stoneware Clear. A test tile shows you beforehand how the grey looks in your firing.
Dinnerware and safety
For dinnerware, Grey is only suitable under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without a clear glaze, the underglaze is not intended for dinnerware. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means exempt from hazard labelling.
