Mayco Spring Green UG-22 – fresh green underglaze for clay and bisque

Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-22 Spring Green is an underglaze in a clear, fresh green for decorating ceramics. You can apply it to wet clay, greenware or bisque, for example for floral motifs, patterns and accent areas. With several coats you paint strong, opaque areas; with fewer coats the greens stay more transparent.

Unglazed, the underglaze fires to a soft matt finish; with a transparent clear glaze the surface becomes glossy. For dinnerware: according to Mayco, Spring Green is only suitable for dinnerware under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without a clear glaze, the underglaze is not intended for dinnerware. The ACMI AP seal (Approved Product) confirms, according to ACMI, that no hazard labelling is required.

Working with Spring Green

Apply the underglaze with a soft brush. For patterns and details two coats are often enough; for a solid area you need 2–3 coats according to Mayco. Let each coat dry before applying the next so that the colour underneath does not dissolve again.

The underglaze is suitable for wet clay, greenware and bisque fired to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart).

Firing sequence with clear glaze

Depending on the surface, proceed as follows. With a two-stage firing, the colour becomes slightly lighter under the clear glaze.

• On greenware or clay: paint, fire to cone 04, apply a transparent glaze and fire to cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
• On bisque: let the colour dry, apply clear glaze and fire to cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
• Clear glaze firing: cone 06–05 for earthenware, cone 5–10 for stoneware
• For dinnerware, always apply a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze
