Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-097 Bright Blue – strong blue for ceramic decoration

Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-097 Bright Blue is an underglaze in a strong, clear blue for decorating ceramics. You can paint it, dab it on or build it up in layers, from transparent blues to rich, opaque areas. It is suitable for leather-hard clay, bisque and greenware. The colours in the series can be mixed with each other.

Without clear glaze, the underglaze fires matt according to Mayco. For stronger colour, apply clear glaze or matt clear glaze over it. For Bright Blue, Mayco recommends the clear glaze SW-001.

Firing and colour effect

The underglaze is formulated for cone 06/05, but most colours in the series also withstand higher temperatures. With Bright Blue and no clear glaze, the colour behaves as follows according to Mayco: at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) it becomes more concentrated, and at cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) it fades slightly. Mayco recommends a test at your firing temperature.

Applying Bright Blue

Shake the bottle well. Apply the colour with a brush to wet or leather-hard clay, then fire to cone 04. For even, opaque areas, work in several layers; for patterns and transparent gradients, a thinner layer is enough. Let each layer dry before applying the next. You can then apply clear glaze and do the glaze firing. You should not spray the underglaze.

Dinnerware only with clear glaze

Mayco lists Bright Blue as dinnerware safe only under a transparent clear glaze suitable for dinnerware (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without clear glaze this does not apply. According to Mayco, the ACMI AP seal means: exempt from hazard labelling.
