Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-067 Ivory – underglaze in a soft ivory shade
Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze Ivory (UG-067) is an underglaze in a light, creamy ivory shade for ceramics, supplied in a 59 ml jar. You can use it to paint backgrounds, fine illustrations, shading and patterns, which you then cover with clear glaze.
Apply the underglaze to wet clay, bisque-fired ware or bisque. For patterns or full coverage, Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. Unglazed, it fires to a soft matt finish; under clear glaze the surface turns glossy.
Working with the underglaze
Stir the colour well before applying. Brush it on in 2–3 coats and let each coat dry before applying the next. This gives you an even surface without streaks. Fewer coats are enough for delicate shading; for strong areas of colour and patterns, use all three.
- Paint on bisque-fired ware or clay, fire to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart), then apply clear glaze and fire to cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
- Paint on bisque, leave to dry, apply clear glaze and fire to cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
- Clear glaze firing for earthenware at cone 06–05, for stoneware up to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
Dinnerware safe only under clear glaze
According to Mayco, the underglaze is only suitable for dinnerware under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without clear glaze, this does not apply. Clear glaze is also worthwhile for the look: it makes the surface glossy, whereas unglazed it stays soft matt.
Test piece for higher temperatures
In the Fundamentals range, the colours behave differently at cone 6 and cone 10: some darken, others lighten or become more concentrated. If you fire in the stoneware range, make a test piece with your clear glaze and your clay.
