Mayco UG-213 Cinnamon – warm cinnamon brown underglaze for ceramics
Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-213 Cinnamon is an opaque underglaze in a warm, slightly reddish brown reminiscent of cinnamon. You can use it to paint motifs, details and areas on ceramics. It is formulated for greenware and bisque and suits nature motifs, rustic designs and earthy colour schemes.
The colour can be painted, dabbed and applied in several layers. It is worth knowing that opaque Fundamentals only show their true colour after firing, so the wet shade in the jar or on the piece is only a guide. A test piece on your own clay shows you the result beforehand.
Application and firing
Do not just stir the colour; shake the jar well before use. For opaque coverage and strong colour, apply two to three coats, according to Mayco. You can paint directly on wet or leather-hard clay or work on bisque. After application on wet or leather-hard clay, fire to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The underglaze is formulated for the range from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart).
- 2–3 coats for opaque coverage, letting each coat dry
- Fine brush for details and lines, broad brush for areas
- Colours can change at high temperatures: test Cinnamon on your clay and in your kiln
With or without clear glaze
Without clear glaze, the underglaze fires matt to satin-matt. With a transparent clear glaze, the colour becomes more intense and glossy. At cone 6 and cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the colour becomes more concentrated, according to Mayco, and the gloss stays soft. For this, Mayco names SW-001 Stoneware Clear as the clear glaze. For tableware you need a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze over the underglaze. Mayco carries the ACMI AP (Approved Product) seal: according to ACMI, no hazard labelling applies.
