Ceramic vario stand – firing aid for glazed baubles and bells
The kiln stilt (also called a hollow ware stand or vario stand) is a ceramic firing aid on which you fire glazed baubles, bells and other hollow ware in the kiln. It has a stable base and three rods, Ø 4.0 mm and 200 mm long. Your piece rests on only a few points, so the glaze barely comes into contact with the stand.
The stand is made of ceramic and is heat-resistant. It keeps its shape during firing and can be used again and again.
Using the vario stand
Place the stand on the kiln shelf and lay your glazed piece on the rods so that it sits securely. The base and the three rods keep the piece clear of the shelf, so the glaze does not stick. The contact points stay small. Make sure the piece stands firmly and does not wobble before you close the kiln.
Tip for hollow ware
Closed baubles and other hollow ware need a small opening before firing, so that the trapped air can expand as it heats up and the piece does not burst. If possible, leave the contact areas unglazed so that nothing sticks to the stand.
