Mayco Stoneware SW-215 Micro Champagne – semi-transparent stoneware glaze with a micro-crystal effect

Mayco Stoneware SW-215 Micro Champagne is a semi-transparent stoneware glaze in a warm champagne shade with a slight gloss and a fine micro-crystal effect. You use it on high-fired ceramics when you want to emphasise textures and reliefs while keeping the surface understated. The bottle contains 473 ml.

Because the glaze is semi-transparent, details underneath stay visible. On textured or modelled surfaces, the micro crystals create soft effects. According to Mayco, it looks its best when high-fired from cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), especially on light clay bodies. On dark clay the champagne shade is correspondingly more subdued; a test tile made from your own clay will show you the result beforehand.

Application and firing

Stir the glaze well before use so that the colour particles are evenly distributed. Apply 2–3 coats with a brush to bisque-fired, dust-free ceramics, and let each coat dry slightly before applying the next. Do not spray the glaze. Applying it too thickly can cause it to run during firing, so leave the foot of the piece free of glaze.

Combining and uses

Micro Champagne can be combined with other glazes from the Mayco Stoneware series, such as the other Micro shades or effect glazes. As the glaze is semi-transparent, it suits layering techniques in which the lower layer remains visible. Always test new combinations on a test tile first. Because of its limited surface durability and the warnings, use it for decorative items such as vases, bowls for display or figures, not for plates, cups or other vessels that come into contact with food.
