Mayco Stoneware SW-131 Birch – creamy white stoneware glaze
SW-131 Birch is an opaque stoneware glaze from the Mayco Stoneware range. It gives an off-white cream that turns brownish on edges and raised areas.
How the glaze turns out depends greatly on how it is applied: applied thinly it looks more amber, applied thickly it forms more white, cloudy areas. With one coat the clay underneath remains visible; with two to three coats the colour becomes stronger.
Mayco shows the colour effect on samples on white clay, fired at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C) in an oxidising atmosphere and at cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C) in a reducing atmosphere. In the oxidising firing at cone 6 you get the creamy white with brownish edges; in the reducing firing at cone 10 the cream tone is retained and the brownish tones become darker.
According to Mayco, Birch is dinnerware safe and carries the ACMI AP seal when you apply and fire it according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Practical tip: Test Birch on a test tile made from your own clay and in your own kiln. The Mayco samples are fired on white clay – on darker clay and under different firing conditions the glaze may look different.
