Mayco Wax Resist AC-302 – wax resist for clean edges and glaze-free areas
Mayco Wax Resist AC-302 is a water-based wax resist for ceramics. It stops glaze or colour from sticking to the areas it covers. You can use it, for example, to keep the foot of a thrown piece glaze-free or to create clean edges and patterns.
You can apply the wax to greenware, bisque or over unfired colour, using a brush, a sponge or by spraying. The wax burns off in the kiln, and the surface underneath is left unchanged. Mayco lists the product as dinnerware safe. The 2 oz squeeze bottle (approx. 59 ml) is easy to dose.
Applying Wax Resist
Apply a generous coat, as even a thin layer repels colour. A second coat will not adhere to the first and beads up. Once applied, a film of wax can only be removed by firing, so plan your areas beforehand.
- Apply the wax to the areas that are to stay glaze-free
- Apply glaze or colour over the top
- Dab off any beads of colour on the wax with a clean, damp, lightly squeezed-out sponge
- Then fire: the wax burns off
Avoiding common mistakes
Colour left on the wax will stick to the surface after firing, so remove all beads of colour before firing. If you sgraffito through the wax, it may flake off. Wax resist only repels when it is applied: glaze applied too thickly can still run during firing.
Brush care
Before you start, fully saturate the bristles of the brush with brush cleaner and remove the excess. This makes cleaning easier. If wax has dried in the brush, it can be dissolved with white spirit. A sea sponge also gives you a varied effect on the fired surface.
