Botz PLUS 9020 – effect enhancer for stoneware glazes

Botz PLUS 9020 is a liquid effect enhancer for stoneware glazes. You apply it as the final layer over the glaze: during firing the glaze ingredients combine in a new way, and depending on how thickly it is applied, colours, textures and gloss change. According to Botz, PLUS enhances the effects particularly well on Botz stoneware glazes and clearly increases the brilliance of the ceramics.

You can also use PLUS neat. In a stoneware firing it produces a glossy glaze with bluish crystal effects. Fired neat on stoneware clay at 1050 °C, it gives a crackle glaze with a silky surface; after firing you can colour the cracks with ink, for example. The tin contains 200 ml; for larger quantities PLUS is also available in 800 ml.

Applying Botz PLUS

Before firing, apply PLUS as the final layer over the glaze. The layer can be even or uneven, and you can also stir PLUS into the glaze. It can be mixed with other Botz products.

• Apply the glaze and leave to dry thoroughly
• Brush on PLUS 1 to 3 times, leaving it to dry in between
• On vessels, apply only a thin layer in the lower area
• Firing: at 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold

Firing and results

If the glaze is completely overglazed with PLUS, the firing range of the stoneware glazes can be lowered to 1150 °C according to Botz. PLUS also produces effects on some earthenware glazes, but it runs heavily there.

Avoiding runs

PLUS can run. Apply it sparingly, leave the foot of the piece free and work especially thinly at the bottom. Protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash or a batt wash. A test piece will show you beforehand how the glaze, application thickness and PLUS work together on your clay.
