Botz PLUS 9020 – effect enhancer for stoneware glazes

Botz PLUS 9020 is a liquid effect enhancer that you apply as the final layer over stoneware glazes. It boosts the effects of the glaze underneath and noticeably increases the brilliance of the ceramics. According to the manufacturer, it also gives attractive results on some earthenware glazes.

During firing, the glaze ingredients combine in new ways. Depending on how thickly you apply it, colours, textures and gloss change. If you cover a stoneware glaze completely with PLUS, its firing range can be lowered to 1150 °C, according to Botz. The tin contains 800 ml, enough to coat several pieces.

Applying Botz PLUS

Before firing, brush PLUS onto the glaze as the final layer, 1 to 3 coats, and let each coat dry. You can brush it on evenly or unevenly, or stir PLUS into the glaze. It can be used neat or mixed with other Botz products. On vessels, apply only a thin layer on the lower part, as PLUS can run, and even a layer that is too thick will flow. Protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash. A test piece will show you beforehand how your glaze reacts.

Effects depending on the firing

The result depends on how and at what temperature you use PLUS:

• Applied unevenly over unfired stoneware glaze, fired at 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold: stronger effects and more brilliance
• Neat in a stoneware firing: glossy glaze with bluish crystal effects
• Neat on stoneware clay at 1050 °C: crackle glaze with a silky surface; after firing, you can colour the cracks with ink, for example
• On earthenware glazes: enhances effects, but runs heavily there
