Mayco CC-101 Transparent Crackle – crackle glaze for fine cracks and a vintage look
Mayco Classic Crackles CC-101 Transparent Crackle is a transparent crackle glaze for ceramics, supplied in a 118 ml (4 oz) bottle. When fired, it forms fine surface cracks (crackle) and gives your pieces a vintage or antique look. Because the glaze is transparent, colours and decoration underneath stay visible.
The glaze is intended for decorative items only, not for dinnerware. It is therefore suitable for vases, bowls used as decoration, figures and other pieces that will not come into contact with food.
Applying the crackle glaze
Apply the glaze to properly bisque-fired clay. Mayco recommends a bisque firing to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). A wide, soft brush helps you lay the coats evenly.
- Shake the glaze well before use
- Apply three coats, letting each one dry
- Fire to cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart), oxidising
- Use only 1–2 coats of colour or glaze under the crackle glaze, as too much material underneath can prevent cracking
Cone 06 or cone 6?
According to Mayco, at cone 06 the result is a transparent, cracked surface through which decoration underneath remains visible. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) the crackle pattern is more clearly defined, but the surface then will not take ink or stain. If you want to emphasise the cracks after firing, fire to cone 06. Then wipe acrylic paint or ink over the piece and wipe it off again, so that the colour stays in the cracks.
