Mayco SW-003 Crackle Matte Clear – clear crackle glaze for stoneware

Mayco Stoneware SW-003 Crackle Matte Clear is a clear, matt effect glaze for stoneware that forms a fine network of crackles when fired. It suits decorative pieces such as ornamental bowls, vases and sculptures that are meant to have a classic, rustic look.

Crackle occurs because the glaze and the clay body shrink by different amounts as they cool. The cracks are therefore intended here. As the glaze is clear, the colour and texture of your clay show through. It looks clearer on light clay and darker on dark clay.

Important: this glaze is not suitable for tableware or for contact with food. The surface crackles, so use it only for decorative work.

Application and firing

Apply the glaze to bisque-fired, dust-free ceramics. Stir it well beforehand. You can apply it in several coats to achieve the effect you want. Let each coat dry before applying the next. Fire in the stoneware range of 1220–1280 °C. Leave the foot ring free of glaze so that the piece does not stick to the kiln shelf. A test piece on your own clay will show you beforehand how the cracks turn out.

Highlighting the cracks

After firing, you can emphasise the crackle: rub black acrylic paint or ink into the surface and wipe off the excess with a damp cloth. The colour stays in the cracks and clearly picks out the pattern. This effect is purely decorative.
