Ellipse plaster mould – shaping clay half bowls evenly
You use the elliptical plaster mould in pottery to shape small bowls and half bowls from clay. It is made of sturdy moulding plaster and produced in Germany.
The plaster draws moisture out of the damp clay pressed into it. The clay firms up against the wall of the mould, and you can release the finished half bowl quickly and easily. With the same mould you can repeat the bowl shape evenly, for example for several identical pieces in courses or workshops. Choose the size from the options.
Working with the plaster mould
Press the clay evenly into the mould and smooth it against the wall so that the bowl ends up a similar thickness all over. Leave the clay to stiffen in the mould: as soon as it shrinks slightly and becomes firmer, the half bowl can be released. Carefully tilt the mould and ease the piece out without force. Then trim the rim neatly; the bowl continues to dry in the air afterwards.
Caring for the mould
Plaster absorbs moisture and releases it only slowly. Let the mould dry out completely between uses so that it absorbs well again. Remove clay residue dry and make sure no bits of plaster get into the clay.
