Mayco Elements EL-121 Copper Adventurine – effect glaze with a copper shimmer for decorative ceramics
Mayco Elements EL-121 Copper Adventurine is a brush-on effect glaze for decorative ceramics. Fired at low temperature, it gives a glossy, metallic finish in dark brown and copper with a yellowish tone. Crystals suspended in the glaze create the copper shimmer. How strong it turns out depends on the thickness of the layers and the firing schedule.
The glaze has increased flow. Apply it neatly and leave enough distance from the foot of the piece. It is suitable for decorative objects, display bowls, figures and accents, but not for tableware.
Applying Copper Adventurine
The crystals settle in the jar, so shake and stir the glaze thoroughly before each use. Apply it to bisque-fired ceramics, not to raw clay.
- Apply 2–3 even coats with the fan brush
- Allow to dry between coats
- Redistribute the crystals before the third coat so that the coverage is even
- Allow to dry thoroughly
- Fire at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
Flow, limits and combining
Because the glaze is fluid, the crystals can run. Do not apply it near the base and leave the foot bare, otherwise the piece will stick to the kiln shelf. Surface problems may occur. A test piece made from your own clay will show you in advance how layer thickness and firing affect the result. The glaze is not compatible with overglazes and is not intended for spray application.
