Mayco UG-206 Fire Engine Red – strong red underglaze for ceramics

Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-206 Fire Engine Red is an underglaze in a bright, strong red for decorating ceramics. You can brush, dab or layer it on. Applied thinly, it gives more transparent shades of red; with several coats the area becomes rich and opaque. This makes it suitable for contrasts, graphic elements, patterns and accents.

According to Mayco, the Fundamentals Underglazes are formulated for cone 06/05 (approx. 998 °C and approx. 1031 °C, guide values per Orton chart). The firing range runs from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). Most colours in the series keep their colour at higher temperatures too. Mayco therefore recommends testing at the temperature you actually fire to. So do a test firing before you decorate a larger piece with this red.

Working with the underglaze

Shake the bottle well before applying the colour. Apply it to wet or leather-hard clay; it also works on bisque. A brush is enough for details and larger areas. For strong, opaque areas, apply several coats and let each one dry a little. For patterns and delicate gradients, use fewer coats. According to Mayco, the underglaze is fired to cone 04 (approx. 1,063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). Afterwards you can optionally apply a clear glaze and fire it in the glaze firing: for earthenware at cone 06–05 (approx. 998–1,031 °C, guide values per Orton chart).

Clear glaze and tableware

Without a clear glaze, the underglaze fires matt. If you want more intensity of colour, apply a clear glaze or a matt clear glaze over it. For cups, plates and other tableware, the colour is only suitable under a transparent clear glaze that is safe for tableware (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without a clear glaze, do not assume it is suitable for tableware. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means: non-hazardous (no labelling required).
