Mayco Underglaze UG-223 Apricot – warm orange for ceramic painting

Mayco Fundamentals Underglaze UG-223 Apricot is an underglaze in a warm, light orange for decorating ceramics. You can paint, dab or layer it, from transparent apricot tones to soft, opaque areas. It suits brushwork, details and larger areas, for example floral motifs, pastel designs and fine accents.

The underglaze is formulated for greenware and bisque. Mayco recommends firings from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). As with opaque Fundamentals colours, the true colour only shows after firing.

Application

Shake the jar well before use. Mayco recommends 2–3 coats, depending on whether you want a transparent design or an opaque area. Let each coat dry before applying the next so that the colour film stays even.

• On wet or leather-hard clay, firing is to cone 04 (approx. 1,063 °C, guide value per Orton chart)
• Thinner coats give transparent apricot tones, several coats give opaque areas

Firing and clear glaze

Without clear glaze, the underglaze fires to a satin matt finish; with a transparent clear glaze the surface becomes glossy and the colour more intense. The clear glaze firing for earthenware is at cone 06–05 (cone 06 approx. 998 °C, cone 05 approx. 1,031 °C, guide value per Orton chart), for stoneware at cone 5–10. The underglaze is formulated for low-fire use. Colours may change at higher temperatures, so it is worth making a test piece on your own clay and in your own kiln.

For dinnerware

For decoration on plates, cups or bowls, use Apricot only under a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze. Only in this combination is the decoration suitable for dinnerware (Dinnerware Safe with Clear Glaze). Without clear glaze, the underglaze is not intended for dinnerware. The product carries the ACMI AP (Approved Product) seal, non-hazardous according to ACMI.
