Mayco Jungle Gems CG-998 Pink Pixie – crystal glaze for decorative ceramics

Mayco Jungle Gems Crystal Glaze CG-998 Pink Pixie is a ready-to-use brush-on glaze for decorative ceramics such as vases, bowls and ornaments. It contains crystalline particles that spread during firing and form lively patterns with crystal effects. Each piece therefore looks slightly different.

The glaze is intended for decorative purposes only. Mayco labels it as not dinnerware safe (Not Dinnerware Safe) because the surface may crackle. For cups, plates or bowls that come into contact with food, use a different glaze.

Application

Shake and stir the glaze thoroughly before each use so that the crystals are evenly distributed. Apply it with a fan brush in 2–3 even coats on bisque-fired ceramics and let each coat dry between applications.

• With the third coat, redistribute the crystals if needed so that they cover the piece evenly
• Do not place crystals near the base of the piece, as they may run during firing
• Allow to dry thoroughly before firing

Firing and colour

Fire the glaze at cone 06 to 05 (approx. 998 °C to approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). For the bisque firing, Mayco specifies cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart); this is the firing of the ceramic before glazing, not the firing range of the glaze. At higher temperatures the colours become paler. Stay within the stated range if you want the colour to remain strong.

Choosing from the series

Jungle Gems is available in several colours. All belong to Mayco's crystal glaze series, whose crystals spread during firing. Pink Pixie (CG-998) is a single colour in this series. For dinnerware you need a glaze that the manufacturer expressly specifies for that purpose.
