Mayco Jungle Gems CG-750 Noel – crystal glaze for decorative ceramics

Mayco Jungle Gems CG-750 Noel is a ready-to-use liquid glaze containing crystalline particles, for decorative ceramics such as vases, bowls and ornaments. During firing the crystals spread and form lively, colourful patterns that turn out differently on every piece.

The glaze is designed for brush application and is applied to bisque-fired ceramics. It is not suitable for tableware: the surface can crackle, so use it only for pieces that will not come into contact with food.

Applying the glaze

Shake the bottle well before each use and stir so that the crystals are distributed through the glaze. Use a fan brush to apply 2–3 even coats to bisque-fired ceramics. For this, Mayco specifies a bisque firing at cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart).

• Allow to dry well between coats
• If necessary, redistribute the crystals before the third coat so that coverage is even
• Do not place crystals near the base, as they may run because of their flow properties
• Allow to dry completely before firing

Firing and colour effect

Mayco recommends a glaze firing from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). If you fire higher, the colours become paler, so stay within this range if you want the crystal colours to stay strong. Because the crystals flow during firing, it is safest to place the piece on a shelf protected with kiln wash. A test piece shows you beforehand how Noel looks on your clay body.
