Goerg & Schneider transition clay – hand-building clay from two clay bodies
Goerg & Schneider transition clay is a ceramic clay body for freehand building and modelling small to medium pieces. It is produced when production changes between two consecutive clay bodies, so it combines properties of both. After firing it is light to cream in colour.
As the clay has no fixed single quality, colour, plasticity, grog content, texture and firing behaviour may vary slightly from batch to batch. It suits practice pieces, creative projects, schools, workshops and pottery classes. If you need an exactly reproducible firing result, a specific colour or a precisely defined grog content, it is better to choose a standard clay body.
Working with transition clay
The clay is suitable for hand-building techniques such as coiling and slab work, as well as for modelling. As the grog content and grain size can vary from batch to batch, it is best to test the clay first on a small sample piece.
- Make a test piece before starting larger projects.
- Fire it as a test with the glaze and firing temperature you intend to use.
- Avoid mixing different batches within the same piece.
- Fire within the range of 1000–1150 °C.
