Mayco Jungle Gems CG-964 Kaleidoscope – crystal glaze with colour play for decorative ceramics
Mayco Jungle Gems Crystal Glaze CG-964 Kaleidoscope is a brush-on glaze containing crystalline particles, for decorative ceramics such as vases, bowls and other objects. During firing the crystals spread out and create a play of red, yellow, blue and green. Each piece develops its own pattern. The glaze is ready to use and comes in a 118 ml container.
The glaze is intended for decorative purposes only. According to Mayco, it is not suitable for tableware or for contact with food, because the surface may crackle. It cannot be sprayed and is applied with a brush.
Applying the crystal glaze
Shake the container well before each use and stir so that the crystals are distributed through the glaze. Apply the glaze to bisque-fired ceramics. According to Mayco, a fan brush is suitable for this.
- Apply 2–3 even coats
- Allow to dry well between coats
- For the third coat, redistribute the crystals if necessary so that the coverage is even
- Allow to dry completely before firing
Firing and flow behaviour
Fire at cone 06 to 05, i.e. roughly between approx. 998 °C and approx. 1031 °C (guide values per Orton chart). At higher temperatures the colours become paler, so stay within the recommended range. The crystals have flow properties and may run during firing. Do not apply them close to the base of your piece; leave a little space there. The result differs from piece to piece. A test piece will show you in advance how the colour play looks on your clay body.
