Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-211 Speckled Blue Yonder – glossy effect glaze with white speckles
Mayco Stroke & Coat SP-211 Speckled Blue Yonder is an effect glaze for earthenware and stoneware that fires glossy and shows white speckles. It is highly pigmented and slightly viscous, so it is easy to apply with a brush, both for fine detail work and for even, opaque areas. You do not need an additional clear glaze, as the surface fires glossy.
The speckles create a lively surface. This suits bowls, mugs, figures and decorative pieces where the glaze itself is the feature. The jar contains 236 ml.
Application and coverage
Apply the glaze to bisque-fired ware that is clean and free of dust. The number of coats controls the effect: one coat gives you a transparent effect, while 2–3 coats give a strong, opaque surface. Let each coat dry before applying the next so that the coats are even and no streaks form. Make a test tile with one, two and three coats beforehand, so you can see which level of coverage you like.
Low or high firing
The glaze is suitable for both low and high firing. The firing temperature changes the result:
- Cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart): strong colour, clearly visible speckles
- High firing, e.g. cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart): glaze slightly more transparent, colour a little lighter, speckles remain stable and keep their structure
