Mayco Clay Mender AC-306 – slip for repairing and attaching
Mayco Clay Mender AC-306 is an enhanced slip for repairing and for attaching parts such as handles or arms to greenware and bisque. The formula is stronger than ordinary slip and bonds repairs and attachments more firmly. The 59 ml (2 oz) comes in a squeeze bottle that you can dispense straight onto the join.
Clay Mender is intended mainly for greenware, that is unfired ceramic. You can also use it to join two pieces of bisque. The product was previously sold under the name Duncan and is now made by Mayco.
Attaching parts
For a firm attachment, for example a handle, proceed as follows:
- Remove any dust from the surfaces and score both sides.
- Brush a thin coat of Clay Mender onto both pieces, then apply generously.
- Press the pieces firmly together for 10 to 20 seconds.
- Leave the area to dry, then sand or smooth it.
- For larger gaps you can work in some clay dust: the mixture becomes thicker and fills the gap.
- Do not spray Clay Mender; apply it with a brush or straight from the bottle.
Firing and glaze
Clay Mender is intended for low-fire clay only and withstands firing up to cone 04 (approx. 1063 °C, guide value per Orton chart). After firing you can glaze the area. Because the mender may look slightly different from your clay, a coat of underglaze over the repaired area sometimes helps. Occasionally glaze does not adhere there as well as on the rest of the clay body. It is therefore worth testing on a test piece first to see how the area looks after firing and glazing.
