Mayco SW-403 White Mudcrack – white stoneware glaze with a cracked texture
Mayco Stoneware SW-403 White Mudcrack is a white stoneware glaze that forms a raised, cracked surface when fired. Use it on objects, decorative pieces and vessels where the texture takes centre stage. The pot contains 473 ml.
You control the texture through the thickness of the coat: the thicker you apply the glaze, the more pronounced the texture. A thin application keeps it more subtle.
Firing and effect
Firing range and reference firing are two different pieces of information: the glaze works in the stoneware range of cone 5–10. Mayco describes the effect for two reference firings.
- Cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), oxidation: heavily textured glaze with a raised, cracked surface
- Cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), reduction: the texture becomes flatter, the colour stays white
What it is suitable for and what it is not
As the glaze is not dinnerware safe, use it on decorative objects, sculptures, vases for dried flowers or bowls that will not come into contact with food. Do not apply it to plates, cups or other vessels used for eating or drinking. Make a test piece from your own clay first: this shows you how pronounced the cracks will be with your coat thickness and your firing. If you would like the same textured effect in black, the Mayco Stoneware series also includes Black Mudcrack (SW404).
