Mayco Stoneware SW-404 Black Mudcrack – black texture glaze with a cracked surface
Mayco Stoneware SW-404 Black Mudcrack is a black stoneware glaze that forms a raised, cracked surface when fired. The thicker you apply it, the more pronounced the texture. That way you decide for yourself whether the surface is only lightly textured or distinctly fissured.
The firing range is cone 5–10 (approx. 1,200–1,300 °C). At cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in an oxidation firing, Black Mudcrack shows its pronounced texture. At cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in a reduction firing, the texture becomes flatter and the colour stays black.
Application and firing
The texture depends directly on the thickness of the layer. If you only want a light texture, apply it thinner; for strong, fissured cracks, apply it thicker. Mayco expressly advises not to spray the glaze. It is applied with a brush.
- Stir the glaze well before applying
- Apply with a brush, do not spray
- Compare a thin and a thick application on a test tile made from your own clay before glazing a piece
- Oxidation firing (cone 6) for pronounced texture, reduction firing (cone 10) for flatter texture
What Black Mudcrack is suited to
The textured surface suits decorative objects, sculptures and vessels that do not come into contact with food. Do not use it for cups, plates or other everyday ceramics, as it is not dinnerware safe according to Mayco. The light counterpart in the series is White Mudcrack (SW-403).
