Mayco Stoneware SW-115 Midnight Rain – reactive glaze in deep blue
Mayco Stoneware SW-115 Midnight Rain is a reactive stoneware glaze in deep blue to almost black for ceramics fired in the stoneware range. Depending on how thickly it is applied and the firing temperature, it produces colour gradients and textures reminiscent of a night sky. The surface is gloss to satin.
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. The AP seal (Approved Product) means, according to ACMI, that it is exempt from hazard labelling. You can use it to glaze mugs, plates and bowls, as well as decorative objects and artistic work. The glaze looks particularly good on textured surfaces, because the colour effect shows differently in recesses and on edges.
Application and firing
Stir the glaze well before use and brush it onto clean, dust-free bisque-fired ware. Mayco recommends applying it by brush, not spraying. The firing range is cone 5–10, i.e. between cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), and beyond that into the cone 5 range.
- Stir the glaze thoroughly
- Apply evenly with a brush and leave to dry well
- Keep the foot free of glaze
- Fire in the cone 5–10 firing range
Choosing the effect
Midnight Rain is reactive, so the result depends on layer thickness and firing temperature. Applied thinly, it looks more satin; applied more thickly, it looks glossier, with livelier gradients. Test the glaze first on a test tile made from your own clay and with your own firing programme before glazing a larger piece. This shows you how strong the effect is in your own firing. As a result, every piece turns out a little different.
