Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-51 Poo Bear – ceramic glaze for lines, motifs and solid areas
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-51 Poo Bear is a ceramic glaze for wet clay, bisque and stoneware. You can use it to paint solid areas, lines and motifs, and mix it with the other colours in the series. The glaze fires glossy, so you do not need an additional clear glaze.
Mayco formulates Stroke & Coat for a maturing firing at cone 06/05, that is cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 05 (approx. 1,031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). It can be fired from cone 06 to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), in oxidation or reduction. This means you can use the same glaze for earthenware and for stoneware.
Applying Poo Bear
One coat gives a translucent result, and further coats increase the opacity. Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. Thinned down, it gives softer gradients and transparent effects.
- Stir the glaze well before applying
- Apply 2–3 even coats with a brush
- Let each coat dry before applying the next
- Then fire according to the manufacturer's instructions
Poo Bear at cone 6 and in high firing
At cone 6 oxidation, Poo Bear is transparent according to Mayco, and the colour fades to a greenish yellow. In mid-range and high firing, motifs can also run. Mayco therefore recommends a test with your own clay and kiln before you glaze a whole piece.
Tableware and safety
After firing according to the manufacturer's instructions, the glaze is dinnerware safe according to Mayco. Stroke & Coat carries the ACMI AP seal; according to ACMI, no hazard labelling is required. The manufacturer of the finished ware is responsible for food-contact testing of the finished piece.
