Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-092 Café Olé – glaze for brush strokes and opaque coverage
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-092 Café Olé is a richly pigmented, thick ceramic glaze for brush strokes, patterns and opaque areas. The glaze fires glossy and needs no clear glaze over it. According to Mayco, it is formulated to mature at cone 06/05.
You control how strong the colour looks by the number of coats: one coat gives a translucent result, and further coats increase the opacity. For full opacity, Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. The bottle contains 236 ml.
Applying Stroke & Coat
You can apply the glaze to damp clay or to bisque-fired ware. For lines, dots and patterns, apply the colour directly with the brush. According to Mayco, colours in the series can be placed next to each other without running. For opaque areas, apply 2–3 coats. Let each coat dry before the next so that nothing smudges.
- The colours in the series can be mixed with each other.
- Thinned with water, the glaze gives a wash or watercolour effect.
- One coat stays translucent, 2–3 coats give opaque coverage.
Firing and high firing
According to Mayco, Stroke & Coat is formulated for firing at cone 06/05: cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). With high firing, for example on stoneware up to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the colours in the series may change: dark shades often become darker, light ones fade. Mayco therefore recommends a test. If you are glazing stoneware, fire a test piece made from your own clay in the planned programme beforehand.
Dinnerware and safety
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. The AP seal (Approved Product) means, according to ACMI: non-hazardous (no labelling required). This applies to the correctly fired piece.
