Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-76 Cara-bein Blue – blue brush-on glaze for painting and coating
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-76 Cara-bein Blue is a blue ceramic glaze for wet clay, bisque and stoneware. You apply it with a brush for lines, motifs and larger areas. The glaze fires glossy, even without a clear glaze. According to Mayco, it is dinnerware safe.
One coat looks translucent. For full coverage Mayco recommends 2–3 coats; with fewer coats the clay stays visible. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), according to Mayco, SC-76 fires semi-transparent in oxidation with no colour change. So the blue you apply is the blue you get.
Using Stroke & Coat
The glaze is formulated for cone 06/05 and can be fired up to cone 10. The higher you fire, the more likely motifs are to run. According to Mayco, the behaviour at cone 6 is given on the label of each colour.
- Stir the glaze well and apply it to a clean, dust-free clay body.
- Paint each coat evenly. For full coverage, apply 2–3 coats.
- For washes and soft gradients, thin with water or medium.
- Leave the foot free so the piece does not stick to the kiln shelf.
- Test the glaze on a test tile made from your clay and in your kiln before use, as Mayco recommends.
Mixing and combining
All colours in the Stroke & Coat range can be mixed with one another. This lets you mix lighter or different shades of blue from SC-76. According to Mayco, the glaze stays where you apply it, so it suits fine details and multicoloured motifs.
