Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-73 Candy Apple Red – glossy red ceramic glaze
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-73 Candy Apple Red is a red ceramic glaze for wet clay, bisque-fired ware and stoneware. It suits details, clean lines and multicoloured designs. The glaze fires glossy, even without an additional clear glaze.
According to Mayco, SC-73 fires a reliable red without you having to take special care. The colour stays red even at higher temperatures. That makes it a dependable choice when a piece needs to come out red.
Application and colour effect
The number of coats determines how strongly the colour covers. One coat stays translucent; Mayco recommends 2–3 coats for full coverage. Let each coat dry before applying the next. Thinned with water or medium, it gives softer gradients and transparent effects. All colours in the range can be mixed together, so you can create your own shades from the red.
Firing and high firing
You can fire Stroke & Coat in oxidation or reduction. The glaze is formulated for cone 06/05 (approx. 998 °C and approx. 1031 °C respectively, guide value per Orton chart) and can be fired up to cone 10. For SC-73, Mayco states a semi-transparent result with no colour change at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart).
- With mid-range or high firing, designs may run; the behaviour at cone 6 is given on the label.
- Test the glaze on a test piece with your clay and in your kiln before use.
Dinnerware and safety
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. The AP seal (Approved Product) means, according to ACMI, that no hazard labelling is required. Both refer to the fired glaze, used as directed by the manufacturer.
