Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-085 Orkid – purple brush-on glaze for strokes and fine lines

Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-085 Orkid is a ceramic glaze in the purple range that you apply to damp clay, greenware or bisqueware. It is heavily pigmented and thick, so you can paint brush strokes, lines and solid areas of colour. The surface fires glossy, so you do not need a clear glaze over it.

At cone 6 in an oxidation firing, Orkid is semi-transparent and fades to light purple. If you are expecting a strong purple, plan a test on your own clay.

Application and coverage

According to Mayco, one coat of Stroke & Coat gives a translucent result, and further coats increase the opacity. For full coverage, Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. Let each coat dry to the touch before applying the next. Colours placed next to each other do not run, so clean outlines and multicoloured designs are possible. Thinned with water, it gives a wash or watercolour effect. All colours in the series can be mixed with one another.

Firing and colour results

According to Mayco, Stroke & Coat is designed to mature at cone 06/05, that is cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). In a high firing the colours change: dark shades can become darker, while light shades such as purple and pink fade. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), Orkid is semi-transparent in an oxidation firing and turns light purple. Mayco recommends testing on your own clay before a high firing.

Dinnerware and safety

According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means that the product is exempt from hazard labelling. The seal is not a licence for every use; follow the manufacturer's application and firing instructions.
