Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-102 Just Peachy – opaque, glossy orange glaze
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-102 Just Peachy is a highly pigmented, thick ceramic glaze in orange. You brush it onto wet clay, bisque and stoneware, either as single brushstrokes or as an opaque coat. One coat is translucent; with 2–3 coats the glaze is opaque. It fires glossy, so you do not need a clear glaze over it. As it does not run or blend, you can place fine lines and multicoloured patterns right next to each other.
According to Mayco, Stroke & Coat is dinnerware safe. The ACMI AP seal means, according to ACMI, that it is exempt from hazard labelling. All colours in the range can be mixed with each other, so you can tint Just Peachy or combine it with other colours.
Applying the glaze
Stir the glaze well before use. Brush it on evenly and let each coat dry to the touch before applying the next. For full coverage you need 2–3 coats; with one coat the colour stays slightly transparent. Applying one thick coat in a single go is a common mistake; several thin coats give more even coverage. Thinned with water, it gives softer gradients and transparent effects.
Firing and colour
The usual firing is at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) or cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). Mayco gives the firing range as cone 06 to 10, oxidising or reducing. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), Just Peachy stays opaque in an oxidising firing and does not change colour, according to Mayco. Other colours in the range behave differently at high temperatures and turn darker or lighter. Make a test piece first. On vessels, leave the base unglazed so the piece does not stick to the kiln shelf.
