Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-055 Yella Bout It – yellow glaze for earthenware and stoneware

Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-055 Yella Bout It is a glossy yellow ceramic glaze for painting onto damp clay, bisqueware and bisque-fired stoneware. You apply it with a brush and fire it in the range from cone 06 to cone 10, oxidising or reducing. According to Mayco, it is formulated for a maturing firing at cone 06/05.

One coat gives a translucent finish, and each further coat increases the opacity. Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. It fires glossy, so you do not need a clear glaze over it. The colours in the Stroke & Coat series can be mixed with one another, so you can also use Yella Bout It to create your own in-between shades.

Firing: cone 06 or high firing?

For the colour effect Mayco intends, fire at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) or cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The glaze can also be fired up to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), according to Mayco, Yella Bout It becomes semi-transparent and lightens slightly. So do not count on an opaque surface at that temperature. At mid and high fire, designs can run. Mayco therefore recommends a test firing with your own clay and your own kiln.

How to apply the glaze

Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. For an opaque yellow at cone 06 you need 2–3 coats. If you want a transparent effect, stay with a single coat.

Dinnerware and safety

After firing according to the manufacturer's instructions, the glaze is dinnerware safe according to Mayco. Stroke & Coat carries the ACMI AP (Approved Product) seal; according to ACMI, no hazard labelling is required. Responsibility for food-contact testing lies with the manufacturer of the finished ware.
