Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-45 My Blue Heaven – opaque blue glaze
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-45 My Blue Heaven is a glossy blue ceramic glaze for brushing onto damp clay, bisque-fired ware and stoneware. The colour ranges from deep blue to turquoise blue. With 236 ml in the pot, there is enough for several pieces.
Stroke & Coat is heavily pigmented and thick. The glaze stays where you put it when applied, and suits brush strokes, lines and opaque areas of colour. One coat still looks translucent; with 2–3 coats My Blue Heaven becomes fully opaque. After firing the surface is glossy, so you do not need a clear glaze. The colours in the series can be mixed with each other, and thinned with water they give watercolour-style washes.
Application
Stir the glaze well before use. Apply My Blue Heaven with a soft brush to clean, dust-free bisque-fired ware and let each coat dry before applying the next. For an evenly opaque blue you need 2–3 coats. With just one coat, or thinned with water, you get lighter, translucent effects. Keep the foot ring or base free of glaze, otherwise the piece will stick to the kiln shelf during firing.
Firing and high firing
Stroke & Coat is formulated for cone 06/05, and the series can be fired up to cone 10 in oxidation or reduction. According to Mayco, most colours in the series keep their shade at higher temperatures, but some colours change in colour or transparency. For high firing, therefore, plan a test piece on your own clay and in your own kiln.
Dinnerware and safety
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal means: exempt from hazard labelling. These statements do not replace checking your firing result if you are glazing dinnerware.
