Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-096 Aqu-ward – opaque brush-on glaze for bisque and stoneware
With Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-096 Aqu-ward you glaze ceramics with a brush: the thick, highly pigmented glaze stays where you put it. This helps with clean lines, fine details and multicoloured designs. You can apply it to wet clay and to bisque-fired pieces (earthenware or stoneware). The 236 ml (8 fl oz) come in a squeeze bottle.
The number of coats determines the coverage: one coat is translucent, while 2–3 coats give full coverage. The glaze fires glossy and does not need a clear glaze. The colours in the range can be mixed with each other, and thinning them gives softer gradients and washes.
Application and firing
Stir the glaze well before use. Apply it with a brush in 2–3 coats and let each coat dry to the touch. Leave the base free of glaze so that the piece does not stick to the shelf in the kiln.
- Usual firing: cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart), shelf firing
- Firing range according to the manufacturer: cone 06 to 10, oxidising or reducing
- One coat gives a translucent result, 2–3 coats give full coverage
- The glaze fires glossy, so a clear glaze is not needed
High firing and dinnerware
At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), SC-096 stays opaque in an oxidising firing according to Mayco, but the colour lightens slightly. If you work at high temperatures, make a test piece on your own clay first. For dinnerware, Mayco states: dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means: exempt from hazard labelling.
