Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-006 Sunkissed – yellow glaze for details and large areas

Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-006 Sunkissed (Mayco code SC-6) is a glossy, solid-colour ceramic glaze in yellow for wet clay, bisque and stoneware. You apply it with a brush. According to Mayco, it stays where you put it. This helps with fine details, clean lines and multicoloured designs without running.

You control the opacity through the number of coats: one coat looks slightly transparent, while two to three coats give opaque coverage. Thinned down, it gives softer gradients and transparent glaze effects. Sunkissed can be mixed with the other colours in the series, which comes in 82 colours. This lets you create your own shades of yellow. The surface turns glossy in the firing, so you do not need an additional clear glaze.

Applying Sunkissed

You can apply the glaze to wet clay, bisque and stoneware. Stir it well before use. Then apply it evenly with a brush and let each coat dry before applying the next. For an opaque yellow, you need two to three coats. With only one coat or with thinned glaze, you get slightly translucent tones. A test piece on your own clay shows you beforehand how the yellow will look.

Firing and dinnerware

The usual firing range is cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart). You can also fire the glaze at high temperature on stoneware, in both oxidation and reduction firing. According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. This applies to the finished, fired piece. According to ACMI, the ACMI AP seal means that no hazard labelling is required.

Choosing from the series

The colours in the series differ in shade, not in application. For larger amounts of colour or several shades, there are sampler sets with 12 colours of 59 ml each. The single 236 ml jar is suitable if you need Sunkissed for several pieces or for mixing.
