Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-097 Cant-elope – opaque orange glaze
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-097 Cant-elope is a highly pigmented, thick ceramic glaze in orange. You brush it onto damp clay, bisque ware or stoneware. It fires glossy and needs no additional clear glaze.
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, its AP (Approved Product) seal means that no hazard labelling is required. It belongs to the Stroke & Coat series, whose colours you can mix with one another.
Application and coverage
Stir the glaze well before use and apply it with a brush. It stays where you put it, so it suits lines, details and multi-coloured designs. With one coat Cant-elope looks translucent; with 2–3 coats it is opaque. Let each coat dry before applying the next. Leave the underside of the piece unglazed so that it does not stick to the kiln shelf during firing.
Firing and high firing
Firing at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) is usual. Mayco gives a range of cone 06 to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), oxidising or reducing. At cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), SC-097 stays opaque with no colour change, according to Mayco. With other colours in the series, the result may change in a high firing. For a new project, therefore, do a test beforehand with your own clay and your firing programme.
