Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-7 Leapin' Lizard glaze – opaque glaze for fine detail
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-7 Leapin' Lizard is a glossy, solid-colour ceramic glaze in a 236 ml container for damp clay, bisque-fired ware and stoneware. The glaze stays where you apply it. That helps with fine details, clean lines and multicoloured designs where nothing should run together.
You control the opacity through the number of coats: one coat looks slightly transparent, two to three coats give full coverage. Thinned, it gives soft gradients and translucent effects. After firing, the surface is glossy even without an additional clear glaze. The range comes in 82 colours, which can be mixed with one another.
Applying the glaze
Stroke & Coat suits beginners and experienced potters alike, because you control the result through the number of coats and thinning. If applied too thickly in one coat, the glaze is more likely to run and dries unevenly; several thin coats are safer.
- Stir the glaze well before use.
- Apply evenly with a soft brush.
- Let each coat dry before applying the next.
- Thin the glaze for transparent effects and gradients.
- Leave the base of the piece free of glaze so that it does not stick to the kiln shelf.
Firing and tableware
Mayco gives cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) as the normal firing range. The glaze is also suitable for high firing of stoneware and can be used in both oxidation and reduction firing. According to Mayco, it is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means that no hazard labelling is required.
Comparing colours
If you would like to try several shades before deciding, the range includes sample sets of 12 × 59 ml. A test tile made from your own clay shows you in advance how many coats you need for the opacity you want.
