Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-072 Grape Jelly – purple glaze for details and larger areas
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-072 Grape Jelly is a purple ceramic glaze for wet clay, bisque and stoneware. You can paint lines, motifs and larger areas with it and set several colours side by side. The glaze fires glossy, even without an additional clear glaze. The bottle contains 236 ml.
According to Mayco, Stroke & Coat is dinnerware safe after firing. According to ACMI, the ACMI AP seal marks a product with no hazard labelling.
Application and coverage
Mayco recommends 2–3 coats for full coverage. A single coat stays translucent, which you can use for softer tones. Apply each coat evenly and let it dry in between. According to Mayco, the glaze stays where you put it, so it suits fine lines and multicoloured motifs.
Firing and colour result
Stroke & Coat is formulated for cone 06/05 and can be fired from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart). With SC-072, the firing temperature matters for the colour: according to the Mayco mid-range firing guide, it turns dark blue at cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart). If you want to keep the purple, fire in the low range. At mid-range or high-fire temperatures, motifs may also run.
Mixing and thinning
The colours in the series can be mixed with each other. Thinned with water or medium, they give softer gradients and transparent effects. Before starting a larger project, make a test piece from your own clay and fire it in the kiln you will be using.
