Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-098 Slime Time – glossy brush-on glaze
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-098 Slime Time is a thick, highly pigmented ceramic glaze in a 236 ml bottle (8 fl oz). You apply it with a brush to wet clay or bisque-fired ware. It stays where you put it during firing, so lines, details and multicoloured designs stay crisp. The glaze fires glossy and needs no clear glaze.
The number of coats controls the coverage: one coat is translucent, and for full coverage Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. All colours in the range can be mixed with each other. Thinned, the glaze gives softer gradients and transparent effects.
Application
The glaze is suitable for wet clay and for bisque-fired ware. Stir it well before use. Apply it in even coats and let each coat dry before applying the next. One coat stays slightly transparent; with 2–3 coats the surface becomes opaque. Leave an area, for example the underside or the foot, unglazed so that the piece does not stick to the kiln shelf.
Firing and colour behaviour
The normal firing range is cone 06–05, i.e. low firing at approx. 998–1031 °C (guide value per Orton chart). Mayco gives cone 06 to 10 overall for Stroke & Coat, including reduction firing. At high temperatures the colours behave differently. According to Mayco, SC-098 Slime Time becomes semi-transparent at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) and the colour turns dark green. For stoneware, it is therefore best to test the glaze first on a test tile made from your own clay.
Dinnerware and seal
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. The AP seal (Approved Product) means, according to ACMI: exempt from hazard labelling.
