Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-012 Moody Blue – glaze for details and multicoloured designs
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-012 Moody Blue is a ceramic glaze for painting on wet clay and bisqueware, including stoneware bisqueware. The glaze fires glossy and, according to Mayco, needs no clear glaze over it. Stroke & Coat is formulated for cone 06/05. The firing range of the series runs from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), oxidising or reducing.
Colours in the series can sit side by side without running. This helps you with fine lines, patterns and multicoloured designs. Used in the majolica technique, the glaze does not run and does not mix with the colours beneath it.
Applying Stroke & Coat
Stir the glaze well before applying. One coat fires translucent, so the surface beneath shows through. For full coverage, apply 2–3 coats and let each coat dry before applying the next. Leave the base of the piece free of glaze so that it does not stick to the kiln shelf during firing.
Mixing, thinning, firing
All colours in the series can be mixed with one another. Thinned with water, they give glazing and watercolour effects. For firing, cone 06/05 is the range the glaze is formulated for. In a high firing up to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the colour effect can change: with other colours in the series it becomes lighter or more transparent. Do a test firing with your own clay first.
Dinnerware and safety
Mayco describes Stroke & Coat as dinnerware safe after firing. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means that the product is exempt from hazard labelling.
