Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-11 Blue Yonder – blue brush-on glaze for painting and coverage
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-11 Blue Yonder is a solid blue ceramic glaze for wet clay and bisque-fired earthenware or stoneware. It fires glossy, so you do not need a clear glaze over it. The 236 ml (8 oz) jar gives you one colour for your own projects in the workshop, in class or in the studio.
According to Mayco, the glaze stays where you put it: colours can sit side by side without running. This lets you paint lines, details and multicoloured patterns. All Stroke & Coat colours can be mixed with each other, and thinned with water they give transparent and watercolour effects. According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. The AP seal (Approved Product) means, according to ACMI, that no hazard labelling is required.
Applying Blue Yonder
Stir the glaze well before applying and use a soft brush. The number of coats determines the result.
- 1 coat: translucent, the surface underneath shows through
- 2–3 coats: opaque, let each coat dry before the next
- Thinned with water: soft gradients, transparent and watercolour effects
- Mixed with other Stroke & Coat colours: your own shades of blue
Firing and firing range
For the series, Mayco gives a firing range from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 10 (approx. 1,285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), oxidising or reducing. The glazes are formulated for cone 06/05 (cone 05 approx. 1,031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). In a high firing, for example at cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), the colour may change depending on the shade. For Blue Yonder in a high firing, make a test piece from your own clay before glazing larger pieces.
