Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-34 Down To Earth – opaque brush-on ceramic glaze
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-34 Down To Earth is a glossy, opaque ceramic glaze for brush strokes, lines and areas of colour on wet clay, bisque and stoneware. According to Mayco, the glaze is highly pigmented and thick. You apply it with a brush to create details, patterns and multicoloured designs.
Stroke & Coat is formulated for cone 06/05, which is approx. 998 °C and approx. 1031 °C (cone 06 and 05, guide values per Orton chart). According to Mayco, it can be fired from cone 06 up to cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart), in oxidation or reduction. Most colours in the range keep their shade at higher temperatures, but a few colours change. A test firing on your own clay in your own kiln will show you how Down To Earth behaves at high temperatures.
Applying Stroke & Coat
Stir the glaze well before applying. One coat looks translucent, and the opacity increases with each further coat; for full opacity, Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. The glaze fires glossy and does not need a clear glaze over it.
- Let each coat dry before applying the next
- Apply several thin coats rather than one thick one: this avoids brush marks and pooling
- All colours in the range can be mixed with one another
- Diluted with water, it gives soft, transparent watercolour-style effects
Firing and tableware
For a standard firing, work in the cone 06/05 range. If you want to use the glaze on stoneware at high temperatures, fire a test piece first, as the shade or transparency of some colours in the range changes. According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. The AP (Approved Product) seal means, according to ACMI: non-hazardous (no labelling required).
